Most wounds heal with a minimum of care, like keeping it clean and protected. Non-healing wounds, on the other hand, don’t heal themselves, even with moderate care. While you may face daily health risks of cuts, scratches or bug bites, non-healing wounds often result from a chronic underlying health condition, such as:
- Poor circulation from heart condition, vascular and/or pulmonary disease
- A weakened immune system
- Diabetes
- Thyroid conditions
- Cancer
Wounds that don’t heal over 4-6 weeks diminish your quality of life and can lead to more serious medical conditions. If you develop a non-healing wound, you may have a health issue that’s uncontrolled or undiagnosed, decreasing your body’s natural ability to heal itself. But you don’t have to live with non-healing wounds.
